Become your own health advocate.

  • Understand your health insurance.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask your doctor questions.
  • Maintain your own records so you know what your doctor knows.
  • Review your medical bills.
  • Learn when to get a second opinion.

Recognize the key risk factors that can lead to chronic disease:

  • Tobacco use
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Physical inactivity
  • Unhealthy eating

Recognize the challenges of providing preventative healthcare and do your part to improve practices.

Resource allocation

  • Support community programs that will provide funding for both acute and preventive care solutions.

Utilization

  • Recognize that barriers to the delivery of these services include lack of time, lack of resources (i.e., technology and staff) and lack of knowledge of screening guidelines. Look for solutions that eliminate these barriers.

Integration

  • Advocate for a patient-centered approach which includes healthcare professionals, policy makers, insurers, educators, employers, city planning officials and more.
